Abstract

Objective: The present study was done to investigate the effect of 8 weeks high-intensity functional training (HIFT) on serum myonectin levels and pancreatic beta cell function in obese men.
Methodology: The statistical population of this study was sedantry obese men aged 30 to 40 with a body mass index above 30 kg/m2 living in Shiraz city. Among them, 30 people were voluntarily selected and randomly divided into two training and control groups. The training group performed HIFT at an intensity of 95% of the second ventilatory threshold, three sessions per week, for 8 weeks, while the control group received no intervention. Blood samples were collected before and 48 hours after the last training session to measure fasting serum levels of myonectin, glucose, and insulin. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) at a significance level of 0.05 using SPSS software version 22.
Results: The results indicated that that HIFT training significantly increased myonectin levels, significantly decreased fasting insulin, and reduced insulin resistance compared to the control group (p=0.001), but did not cause any changes in fasting glucose (p=0.32) and pancreatic beta cell function (p=0.66).
Conclusion: It seems that the HIFT training be effective in improving markers of insulin resistance in sedantry obese individuals but has little effect on pancreatic beta cell function.
