Abstract

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of six weeks of high-intensity functional training with artichoke supplementation on the inflammatory status of young obese men.
Methodology: 40 obese men were divided into 4 groups: high-intensity functional training (HIFT), high-intensity functional training with artichoke supplementation (HIFT + supplementation), supplementation, and control. The training groups performed 60 minutes of HIFT training for 6 weeks, 3 sessions per week, each session including 10 to 20 minutes of technical-skill exercises and 5 to 30 minutes of specific exercises. Also, the subjects randomly consumed 5 grams (equivalent to one tablespoon) of artichoke supplement for 6 weeks. Covariance and Bonferroni post hoc test were used for biochemical variables including plasma levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10, and the significance level was P<0.05.
Results: In the exercise, supplement, and exercise + supplement groups, a significant decrease in TNF-α and IL-6 and a significant increase in IL-10 levels were observed (P=0.001). Covariance analysis showed a significant difference between the study groups in TNF-α (F=13.33, P=0.001) and IL-6 (F=26.87, P=0.001) levels, and all groups had significantly lower TNF-α and IL-6 levels (P<0.05) and higher IL-10 levels (P=0.001) compared to the control group. However, pairwise comparisons between groups did not show a significant difference in any of the variables (P>0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that performing HIFT training with and without artichoke supplementation improves the inflammatory status of young obese men, however, no difference was observed between the effects of the interventions.
