Abstract
Objective: The aim of the present study was the effect of colostrum powder supplementation on oxidative and inflammatory stress markers after exhaustive exercise in healthy men.
Methodology: For this purpose, 30 non-athletic male students with a mean and standard deviation of age 22.45±1.74 years, weight 72.82±5.51 kg, height 177.67±5.28 cm were selected as the research sample. They were randomly assigned to two groups receiving colostrum powder (20 grams of powdered colostrum) and placebo. The initial blood sample was taken at baseline before starting the supplementation, the second blood sample was taken after 14 days of supplementation and before the start of the exhaustive sports activity, and the third blood sample was taken from the subjects after the restorative sports activity. To analyze the data, the analysis of variance test with repeated measurements and the follow-up test of Bonphroni (significance level 0.05) were used.
Results: The results showed that the concentration of superoxide dismutase, creatine phosphokinase, and lactate dehydrogenase decreased significantly after 14 days in the supplement group compared to the control group after restorative exercise (p≤0.01), and the total antioxidant capacity index after 14 days in the supplement group, compared to the control group, after exercise, the resistance increased significantly (p≤0.01).
Conclusion: Therefore, colostrum powder supplementation can probably be used to reduce oxidative and inflammatory stress caused by intense sports activities. However, more studies are needed to draw a definitive conclusion in this regard.
