[English]

Objective: Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Myostatin, as a negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth, is considered a potential target for exercise interventions. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of eight weeks of resistance training on serum myostatin levels and its correlation with body composition indices in middle-aged women with type 2 diabetes.

Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design and a control group was conducted on 14 middle-aged women with type 2 diabetes. Participants were randomly assigned to either resistance training (n=7) or control (n=7) groups. The training group performed resistance exercises for 8 weeks at intensities of 40–75% of one-repetition maximum. Serum myostatin levels, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BF%), and skeletal muscle mass (SMM) were measured at baseline and 48 hours after the last training session. Data were analyzed using paired t-test and ANCOVA at a significance level of P < 0.05.

Results: Resistance training, compared to the control group, significantly resulted in lower serum myostatin levels (P=0.001, ES=0.767), BF% (P=0.001, ES=0.635), and BMI (P=0.001, ES=0.707), and significantly higher levels of SMM (P=0.019, ES=0.408). No significant correlations were observed between changes in myostatin and BF% (P=0.825), BMI (P=0.594), or SMM (P=0.994).

Conclusion: Eight weeks of resistance training, by reducing myostatin and improving body composition, can be recommended as an effective non-pharmacological approach in the management of type 2 diabetes in middle-aged women, although no significant changes in glycemic control were observed.
